A Different Kind of Championship Weekend
The 2026 Houston City Chess Championship will be held in a distinctive venue featuring natural daylight, architectural character, and a tournament atmosphere unlike anything we have previously offered.
Players may compete in the FIDE-rated Houston City Chess Championship, build a four-player team for the FIDE-rated Team Blitz Championship, or enter both events at a discounted combined price.
Houston City Chess Championship
Four FIDE-rated classical games with your choice of a 2-day or 3-day schedule. The 2-day schedule has an accelerated first round at G75;d15 before merging with the 3-day schedule for round 2. All other rounds G90;inc30. Top 2 sections are FIDE-rated & US rated, Amateur section is US Chess rated only.
Houston Team Blitz Championship
Six double round team matches = 12 FIDE-rated blitz games for players competing in every team match.

Main Event Prize Fund
Championship First Place
The $1,000 Championship first-place prize is fully guaranteed and will not be reduced based on participation.
Based on 100 Paid Main Event Entries
The full Main Event prize fund is based on 100 paid Main Event entries.
Minimum Amount to Be Awarded
At least $3,000 will be awarded in the Main Event under the current minimum payout calculation.

What Counts as a Paid Main Event Entry?
The following registrations count toward the 100-entry calculation:
- Main Event-only entries
- Full Championship Weekend entries
Team-Blitz-only entries do not count toward the Main Event prize-fund calculation.
Sections
- Championship — open to all players, recommended for 1800+ only; FIDE and US Chess rated
- Reserve — open to players rated under 1800; FIDE and US Chess rated
- Amateur — open to players rated under 1400; US Chess rated only
Playing Rules, Ratings & Pairings
Both the Houston City Chess Championship and the FIDE-Rated Team Blitz Championship will be conducted under the applicable FIDE Laws of Chess to govern over the board play in FIDE rated sections but will be using US Chess rules for pairings and prize distribution.
The rating systems used for pairings, prize eligibility, and Team Blitz roster eligibility are described below. A rating used for tournament administration does not replace or modify a player's official FIDE or US Chess rating.
Accelerated pairings may be used. Announcements will be made on-site in the event this decision is made for the main event based on number of entries and spread of ratings of players registered in each section.
City Championship Ratings
The Houston City Chess Championship will use each player's published August 2026 US Chess Regular rating for tournament pairings and seeding.
The same published US Chess Regular rating will be used to determine rating-based prize eligibility.
The Main Event will follow the FIDE Laws of Chess while using US Chess Regular ratings for pairing, seeding, and rating-based prize eligibility. If a US Chess rating is not available, then other published ratings such as FIDE or another national rating will be utilized.
Team Eligibility Rating
Because players may have substantially different ratings across different rating systems and time controls, a Team Eligibility Rating will be assigned to each player solely for Team Blitz roster and rating-cap purposes.
A player's Team Eligibility Rating will be the highest published rating (OTB or online) among:
- FIDE Standard
- FIDE Rapid
- FIDE Blitz
- US Chess Regular
- US Chess Quick
- US Chess Blitz
Players Without a Published Rating
A player who has no published rating in any of the rating systems listed above will be assigned a minimum Team Eligibility Rating of 1200 for purposes of calculating the team's 2200 average rating cap.
This assigned rating is used only for tournament eligibility and roster calculations. It is not an official FIDE or US Chess rating and will not affect the player's official rating in either system.
The tournament organizer reserves the right to assign an appropriate Team Eligibility Rating when a player has no rating in the systems listed above but has another verifiable competitive chess rating or playing history that materially indicates a higher playing strength. Any such determination will be made before the player's team roster is approved.
Registration, Ratings & Team Eligibility
Section Eligibility & Rating Disclosure
Players are responsible for registering in the highest section for which they are eligible.
All participants must disclose any published ratings held with:
- US Chess
- FIDE
- Any recognized national chess federation, including but not limited to Mexico, Canada, England, India, and other national federations
When determining section eligibility, the Organizer may use the highest applicable published over-the-board/online rating from any recognized federation .
The Organizer reserves the right to assign or reassign a player to the appropriate section at any time before or during the tournament.
Failure to Disclose a Rating
Failure to disclose a published rating known to the player, or providing inaccurate or incomplete rating information, may result in one or more of the following actions at the Organizer's discretion:
- Reassignment to the appropriate section
- Forfeiture of prizes or trophies
- Removal from the tournament without refund
- Other penalties deemed appropriate by the Chief Tournament Director
The Organizer's determination regarding section eligibility and the applicable rating shall be final. Tournament organizers are not expected to independently investigate every player's rating history in every national federation. Players are responsible for accurately disclosing all known published ratings available during registration.

Board Order
Teams may determine their own board order regardless of rating. Once the final roster and board order are submitted, the board order is fixed for the entire tournament. When an alternate is used, the remaining primary players retain their relative order, and the alternate enters the lineup on Board 4.
Alternate Eligibility
The alternate's Team Eligibility Rating must be lower than the Team Eligibility Rating of each of the four primary players.
The alternate is not included when calculating the team's 2200 average rating cap.
Substitutions
- The alternate may replace any one primary player before the start of a Team-Swiss round.
- When a primary player is replaced by the alternate, the remaining primary players shall move up as necessary while retaining their original relative board order.
- The alternate shall always occupy the last active board.
If the approved board order is A–B–C–D with E as the alternate, and Player B is absent, the lineup becomes A–C–D–E.
The Organizer reserves the right to interpret and enforce these regulations in the interest of fair competition. Final eligibility and lineup decisions are subject to approval by the tournament organizer and/or Chief Tournament Director.
FIDE-Rated Team Blitz Championship

Format
The Team Blitz Championship will be conducted as a 6-round Team Swiss.
Each team will face six opposing teams (assuming enough teams registered). Every team match is played on four boards. Each player faces the corresponding player on the opposing team twice:
- One game as White
- One game as Black

Times after the first Team-Swiss round are approximate and may be adjusted based on the completion of the Main Event round and the pace of Team Blitz play.

No Team Yet?
Solo players may register and request assistance finding teammates. Tournament organizers will help connect individual players seeking to form eligible teams. You must register for the blitz team event for assistance. Coordinating players and forming teams takes significant time and effort. If we are unable to place you on a team you will receive credit for the blitz entry fee towards a future Chess Refinery event.
Team placement cannot be guaranteed and will depend on the number, ratings, and availability of players requesting placement.
2200 Team Average Rating Cap
July Registration and August Rating Changes
Teams registering while the July 2026 published rating lists are in effect may qualify using those July ratings.
Once a complete four-player primary roster is registered and confirmed as eligible under the July lists, that team's eligibility is locked. A team may therefore remain eligible even if August rating changes subsequently push its average above 2200.
Any roster change made after the August 2026 rating lists are published may require the team's eligibility to be recalculated using the applicable August published ratings.
Final roster eligibility is subject to verification by the tournament organizer and/or chief arbiter.

Team Blitz Prize Fund
A minimum of $400 is guaranteed to the first-place team.
With four primary players, that equals $100 per player.
The total Team Blitz prize fund is based on 20 registered teams.
If fewer than 20 teams participate, the overall Team Blitz prize fund may be proportionally adjusted based on the final number of registered teams. The guaranteed first-place team prize will not be less than $400.
Additional team prizes and the final prize distribution will be announced based on final participation.
Early Entry Fees
City Championship
Includes the four-round FIDE-rated classical Main Event.
EF increases to $125 on Saturday August 8th at 10pm central.
Team Blitz Per Player
Includes participation in the 6-round Team Swiss Blitz Championship only.
No entry fee required for the "alternate" player.
EF increases to $50 on Saturday August 8th at 10pm central.
Both Championships
Enter the City Championship and Team Blitz together and save $20.
Increases to $145 on Saturday August 8th at 10pm central.
Complimentary Main Event + Team Blitz Entry for GMs, IMs, WGMs & WIMs. Titled players receiving complimentary entry to the Houston City Chess Championship may also participate in the Team Blitz Championship at no additional charge. Titled players participating only in the Team Blitz must register at the regular $40 Team Blitz-only entry fee. To request complimentary Main Event entry, email us at [email protected]. A flat $99 deduction will apply to any Main Event prize won by a player receiving complimentary entry. No deduction will apply to Team Blitz prizes.
Refund & Withdrawal Policy
We understand that plans can change. However, tournament expenses are committed in advance, and late withdrawals—particularly from a team event—can affect other players. The following refund and withdrawal policy applies to all registrations.
Main Event & Full Weekend Registrations
- Withdrawal requests received on or before August 9, 2026 are eligible for a refund of the entry fee, less a $10 administrative fee.
- Withdrawal requests received August 10–12, 2026 are eligible for a 50% refund.
- No refunds will be issued after August 12, 2026 or for no-shows.
Team Blitz Withdrawals
Because Team Blitz participation affects an entire team's roster and eligibility, players who need to withdraw should notify both the tournament organizers and their teammates as soon as possible.
Full Weekend Entries: If a Full Weekend entrant remains registered for the Main Event but withdraws only from the Team Blitz, no partial refund will be issued for the discounted Team Blitz portion of the package.
Team Blitz-Only Players Registering as Part of a Team: Players who pay the standalone $40 Team Blitz entry fee and register as part of a specific team are eligible for refunds according to the general refund deadlines listed above. If the withdrawal of a teammate leaves the team unable to field an eligible four-player roster, the remaining team members may also withdraw and request refunds, provided the team's withdrawal occurs within the applicable refund period.
After the final refund deadline, the withdrawal of one or more teammates does not automatically make the remaining team members eligible for a refund. Tournament organizers will make reasonable efforts to assist with an eligible replacement when possible.
Solo Players Requesting Team Placement: Players may register individually and request assistance being placed on a team. Team placement is not guaranteed. If the tournament organizer is unable to place a solo registrant on an eligible team, the player's $40 Team Blitz entry fee will be converted to a $40 credit toward a future The Chess Refinery tournament rather than refunded.
In summary, registering with a complete team gives you normal cash-refund rights under the published deadlines. Registering solo and asking the organizer to build a team for you means accepting future-event credit if placement is unavailable.
All withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted by email to [email protected] . Any non-refundable payment-processing fees, if applicable, may be deducted from the amount refunded.
What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
Recommended Items
- A digital chess clock (if you own one).
- A pen or pencil for recording moves.
- Any snacks or non-alcoholic drinks you wish to bring. A walk-in refrigerator (staff access only) and microwave will be available.
- A sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold in air-conditioned buildings.
- A bag to keep your cell phone and other personal belongings secure under your table.

- Carbon notation sheets for FIDE rated sections
- Single page notation for non-FIDE sections
Not Permitted
- Electronic notation devices
- Any electronic devices prohibited under the published Electronic Device Policy.
- Recreational equipment (scooters, basketballs, sports equipment, etc.)
Food Storage & Meal Options
Players are welcome to bring their own food to the tournament. The venue has an on-site walk-in refrigerator available for storing player food, as well as a microwave for reheating meals.
Important Refrigerator Access Rules
Food submitted for refrigeration must be properly packaged and clearly labeled with the full name of the player.
Players should turn their labeled food in to tournament staff. A staff member will place the food in the refrigerator on the player's behalf.
When a player is ready to retrieve the food, the player must ask tournament staff for assistance.
A microwave will be available for players to reheat their food.
We're Working on Convenient On-Site Meal Options
We know that leaving the tournament venue, driving to a restaurant, waiting for food, and returning between rounds is not always convenient. We are currently exploring options to make meals easier for players during the tournament weekend.
On-Site Food Truck
We may bring a food truck vendor directly to the venue during designated tournament hours, allowing players and accompanying family members to purchase food without leaving the property.
Pre-Ordered Group Meals
We are also considering advance meal pre-orders from nearby restaurants such as Raising Cane's or Panera Bread. Players would order in advance, and meals would be coordinated for arrival at the venue at a designated time.
Food truck availability, restaurant pre-orders, menus, pricing, ordering deadlines, and pickup procedures will be announced closer to the tournament once arrangements are confirmed.
Any food truck service or group meal pre-order program is currently being explored and is not guaranteed until officially confirmed.
