What to expect:

Our goal is to build a budding group of chess masters. To do so, kids need additional opportunities to play and practice outside of attending rated tournaments. We aim to provide this to our community. Each session will be hosted by rated USCF adults who can give pointers and tips while kids play. They will be giving guidance on improving the kids' chess skills with brief lectures and tactics solving sessions, etc. We aim to make sure each kid has a solid foundation on the core basic building blocks of chess.

This is not a "one-time" class. This is an on-going program where kids can come practice, play and learn at the same time. Priority and space will be given to those who are serious about skill improvement and who are attending regularly. There is no 'end date' to the program. We will be keeping it going for as long as we have available volunteer staff to run it. Chess requires continuous improvement, typically over a long period of time and each student develops their own skill set at a different pace.

Kids will be earning "belts" for making a milestone in our program. i.e. white belt, yellow belt, orange, green, purple, blue and black belt, similar to karate lessons. The actual belt will be a silicone wristband that will cost parents $5 each. To earn the belt, the child will need to pass certain skill tests, earning a sticker for each one on the progress chart towards each major milestone.
