opportunities for kids.

List of other chess organizations in Houston

Jim Liptrap maintains a comprehensive list of all the chess organizations who offer lessons in Houston and lists almost all upcoming tournaments. Please see the link here.

Private Lessons

Text us at 281.698.0068 with info about your child (level of experience, how long he/she has been playing, ELO rating from an online chess site, etc.) and we can refer you to a coach in the Houston area. Please do not call as we do not take calls most of the day. Text to request a phone call which will likely have to take place after typical business hours (after 5pm Mon-Fri or Sat/Sun).

Group Lessons

We did offer a free ongoing kids program at The Chess Refinery. Unfortunately, we lost our lease space in 2020. No paid program is available at the current time from The Chess Refinery. There are plans to run chess activities at WoodChase Park in the Westchase area in early 2022. Stay tuned. Join our Facebook group to keep apprised of any new events and changes to our programming. We also plan on running a monthly workshop sometime towards the end of 2021 in the Katy area.

Playing/Practice Opportunities

Here are the ways:
  1. USCF rated tournaments
  2. casual OTB groups (over-the-board)
  3. online chess sites like chesskid.com
  4. play against family and friends
  5. after-school chess programs - check with your school

OTB (over-the-board) Chess for Kids

Our program link is here: http://www.thechessrefinery.org/scholastic-corner.html

We are only aware of one other kids group thus far that is free and just for casual play:
